This is one of my favorite flowers and it has such a lovely name. This shot was hand held and taken with my manual focus 1:1 macro lens. The flower is actually only about 5 mm across. The yellow centre is less than 1 mm wide. This lens will zoom in 5 times closer than this. I am having a quiet reflective time and find I don’t have a lot to say, but I will post more pictures as I play with this beautiful lens.

On Sunday I visited the Tweed River Gallery in Murwillumbah with an artist friend. We were looking for inspiration. It was a dull rainy day, unusual for this area (I am ‘up North’ right now). This is a stunning gallery showcasing an incredible range of talent. One artist was exhibiting beautiful subtle etchings/aqua tints and his work really got me. I have always wanted to learn etching. I only took a few photographs, and this is my favourite. The day reminded me how much I love gentle subtle tones and form.

After 12 year of drought Victoria is celebrating the rain, despite the flooding. This is the landscape that overlooks my daughter’s school. it is a magical place whatever the season. I am 2,000 km from here now, visiting Byron Bay. My heart calls me to the ocean and the warmth of the Northern Rivers, and I still plan to move up this way, but I also love the Yarra Valley. Australia is an extraordinarily beautiful and diverse country. As someone pointed out to me recently only around 0.3% of the people on earth get to live here. We are so fortunate!

We have been dancing rain dances in Victoria for so long we stopped believing in them. Now the rains have come and they don’t seem to know when to stop. Our beautiful Yarra River is swollen and wild – roaring along and nearly breaking its banks. The weather is weird. Along with the flooding rain we have wild winds and unseasonal humidity. We are learning to expect the unexpected.

Two days after photographing hopeful spring blossoms I went for an early morning walk, only to discover a light sprinkling of snow on the nearby hills. It doesn’t look much like spring now, does it?

This experience is an interesting parallel of our national political landscape. For those of you who know nothing about Australian politics (by which I mean anyone who doesn’t live here) we have just effectively voted against everyone! Australians have finally voiced our distaste for politicians by refusing to elect. For the first time in a long time I am feeling a touch of national pride. Nobody is quite sure what to do because nobody won and the only way anyone can govern is if they agree to agree with someone they don’t agree with (if you get my drift). We don’t know what season it is, and we don’t know who is running the country. And, at least among my friends and acquaintances, nobody seems to care!

Hello blog, I have missed you so. I am back in the mountains and the seasons are turning. There is nothing like a trip to the city to rust up my creative flow. I took this optimistic blossom image two days ago. Since then it has snowed on the very hills you see here. Life can be so unpredictable!

I’ve been in the city for a while now and I’m adjusting. I have found there are still green places here. The inhabitants are very interesting, if a little unusual at times.

I have returned to my roots. I grew up in the inner city, and have come back temporarily to help my mother who has just had a hip replacement operation. I took this photograph in a nearby park. My dear dog (who is part kelpie) doesn’t know what to make of the city. She is very grateful for this off lead park where she can run and chase her ball.

It is easier to be numb in the city. There is bitumen under my feet and the sky is polluted by bright lights even when there is no moon. It’s noisy, smelly and busy. The sensitivities that are natural for me in the country don’t work for me here. I have to shut down a bit to shut it out.

I read recently that Australia could easily produce enough energy to meet the needs of the entire planet, and all from clean, renewable sources. It is obvious to anyone with half a brain that the technology already exists to reduce pollution without destroying our comfortable lifestyles. Of course once the oil runs out this will not longer be true. I’m pretty sure with our present technologies we need oil to build the infrastructure – the wind turbines and solar farms – that will help us to free ourselves from our dependency on oil. We are still arguing about the merits of alternatives. Soon we won’t have the luxury of creating alternatives. We won’t have the resources we need to transition to new ways of generating energy.

There are still plenty of Australians arguing that we should reject wind power because the turbines don’t look nice.

What the …?

Lets just get on with it!
