Laughing Kookaburra

This is my favourite species of bird. I took this photo outside our place this afternoon. Yes we are living in the bush! The Laughing Kookaburra really does laugh – a lot – but especially at dusk. On most evenings they call to each other across the valley as the light fades. They are big, tough, gutsy birds. They hang around in trees looking for food and when they see a tasty morsel they swoop down and grab it. They are not shy around humans. My younger daughter once had a sausage stolen right out of her hand by a cheeky kookaburra. Needless to say she was quite indignant.

Kookaburras pair for life, and the male and the female share the care of their babies. This is as good a reason as any to write about them on Mother’s Day.

They have an air of confidence about them. This, combined with their ‘laughing’ and their general good looks, has made them iconic in Australia.

Here is a recording of kookaburras laughing …

  1. Your picture of a kookaburra is more beautiful and more believable than the ones I’ve seen in a book. Thank-you for including a link on their laugh. Happy Mother’s Day!

  2. Awesome shot Kirsty. I love kingfishers.

  3. Lovely pic Kirsty – he looks a cheeky little fellow, he has real character in his face:) Now if you could get a shot of him stealing a sausage…..:)

    • Now there’s a challenge. I confess that I long to be a really good bird photographer. They are one of the most difficult subjects to photograph. So much hanging around quietly waiting for that magic shot!
